It almost seems surreal. Like any moment I will wake up. Today was a day I had been waiting for and I never knew if it would ever truly be.
When I decided to become a photographer, some seven years ago, I did so in a foreign country, far away from the comforts of home. I felt a tremendous responsiblity to do what I did with such passion and love that I would leave a lasting impression on my clients. Yet, I was a pioneer of sorts, for there were very few creating custom portraiture where I was. As the years went on I found refuge in following a few photographers. Laura Siebert was one of them. Not only one of them, but a favorite. For she had the ability to capture emotion and relationships and that was something I could relate to.
The years went by but one thing remained. I continued to follow Laura’s work. When we learned we were moving to the states, one of my very next thoughts was that I could finally get Laura to capture my family.
Today was finally that day.
As we were getting dressed for our portrait session. Jonathen asked me, “so Mom, is Ms. Laura your idol?” I had to giggle a little. I answered him, that I really admired Ms. Laura. He was full of questions. He asked what I admired about her, and I let him know that I thought that her work was beautiful and that she was such a nice person to me too.
While driving to the session, I kept replaying my conversation with Jonathen and realized he was trying to understand what attributes would be admirable. That was important for him to understand.
At the session watching Laura with my kids while getting to see her in action, it was very clear. She was a beautiful example of someone to admire. Jonathen getting to spend time with her, along with my words, and he knows just the right definition of admirable.
And for me, I now know that dreams really can come true.
